SUMMARY

Purpose:

To verify the induced astigmatism (IA) when endocapsular phacoemulsification is made with a 3,2 mm self seading superior scleral and temporal clear corneal incisions; and to compare the IA between the two types of incisions.

Methods:

The sample comprised 24 patients selected prospectively and submitted to endocapsular phacoemulsification with superior scleral (group 1-12 patients) and temporal clear corneal (group 2-12 patients) incisions. Measurerments by corneal computerized topography enabled evaluation using Cravy's method of the induced astigmatism after 5,30 and 90 days post-operatively.

Results:

It was demonstrated that the IA was not significant at 5,30 and 90 days in both groups (0.36, 0.21, and 0.01 -group 1; 0.19, 0.16, and -0.04 group 2); in addition no significant difference between the IA of both groups was demonstrated.

Conclusions:

Endocapsular phacoemulsification with superior scleral and temporal clear corneal 3.2 mm incisions does not induce significant astigmatism at 5,30, and 90 days post-operatively. There was no difference between the outcomes of both groups.
