The macular hole is an entity related to several phy-siopathogenic mechanisms that could be presented with many clinical features and consequently with different prognosis and treatments. We reviewed retrospectively the 1030 records in the Retina Vitreous Section of the UNIFESP/EPM, from 1980 to 1995. The idiopatic macular hole was the most frequent type eigtheen (66.6%) cases, with prepoderance offemales, average age of 64 years and bilaterality in five (18%) patients. In relation to macular hole secondary to cystoid macular edema, seven (87.5%) were females and lens surgery two (37.5%) and uveitis one (28.6%) were the most frequent etiologies. The male group accounted for three (83.3%) in the cases of traumatic hole and the average age was 31.6 years old similarly the female group accounted two (66.6%) in the cases of myopia.
