Extracapsular cataract extraction and primary posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were performed in 14 children (age range: 5-17 years) with congenital (9 cases), traumatic (4 cases) and developmental (1 case) cataract. The most frequent postoperative complications found were posterior synechiae (4 cases) and posterior capsule opacification (all cases). There were visual acuity improvement in all cases and these preliminary results suggest that IOL implantation may be a safe and effective method of optical correction for aphakia in children.
